abstract = "The methods for obtain the estimation of urban fractal dimension
can be a new possibility to better understand the urban sprawl
process, especially in the medium-sized cities, where the changes
are faster and the focus of researcher are minor. The aim of this
paper was to analyze the urban sprawl process in medium-sized
cities by using the fractal dimension method associated with the
density occupation. For this, four medium-sized cities in the
S{\~a}o Paulo state were selected: Botucatu, Itapetininga,
Piracicaba and S{\~a}o Jos{\'e} do Rio Preto. These cities were
selected according to differences in morphology, population and
relief aspects. It was utilized remote sensing images of Landsat
TM and historical maps comprehending the period of 1938 until 2005
for the analysis. The digital processing and a spatial analysis
were developed. The results showed the efficiency in the use of
fractal dimension method associated with the occupation density in
the urban growth analysis. All urban areas showed the most
elevated D values in the urban center and minor to periphery.
While the traditional methods consider the total urban area and
the increasing in time, the fractal dimension considers the
irregularities of this growth by the differences in urban fill.",
